Relative Similarities III
Encountering pairs of twins, Izabella Gustowska turns their resemblance into a playful exploration of similarity, difference and the ways in which the camera shapes what we see. The film suggests that identity and representation are never fixed, but emerge through the relationship between the filmed subject, the artist and the camera’s gaze.
In her Relative Similarities series, Izabella Gustowska observes pairs of twins, beginning with a fascination with their almost identical appearance. In Relative Similarities III, however, physical resemblance becomes a starting point for an experiment with difference, identity and the act of filming itself. The artist enters into a kind of game with the women, while their reactions and interaction influence the process of recording. Gustowska explores the boundary between reality and representation, revealing that resemblance is never absolute and that the meaning of an image shifts with perspective, interaction and context.
