Another Story: Polish Shorts

The selection of Polish short films featured in the ANOTHER STORY section is the result of a collaboration involving numerous individuals and institutions, as well as countless hours spent viewing films, tracking down copyrights and prints, and liaising with the filmmakers. The outcome is a unique program that tells a significant chapter in the history of Polish cinema!

“When we think of women’s non-fiction cinema in the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), documentary directors are usually the first to come to mind. Yet, in the 1970s, the camera also began to find its way into the hands of visual artists. With the advent of second-wave feminism and the emergence of lighter, more accessible cameras, film ceased to be the exclusive domain of official film production. Alongside documentary filmmaking, video art began to flourish—a medium that was more personal and experimental, and one that defied institutional constraints. By combining documentary and moving-image art in a single program, we aim to present a less obvious history of women’s non-fiction cinema in the PRL.”
