The Culprits
After years of silence about the abortion she experienced as a teenager, Marta receives a hundred anonymous testimonies from women who have gone through similar experiences. Bringing these stories to the screen, along with six girls who give voice and face to these silenced stories, the film opens a shared space where what was silenced becomes collective.
In an audition room, six girls read aloud anonymous testimonies of abortions experienced during adolescence. The stories vary in time, context and origin: from a village in the 70s, to a girl from last year, as well as a clandestine clinic in the 2000s. Women separated by time and space, but bound by a shared experience marked by silence, loneliness, guilt and anger.
From behind the camera, Marta, the director, listens and asks questions. The reading of the stories opens a space for conversation where the girls engage in dialogue with stories that, despite being anonymous, resonate strongly with their present and connect with their own experiences.
These stories jump from the paper to the set. Through different mise-en-scènes, the six girls give voice and face to fragments of these experiences. Each scene becomes a window into a woman’s story and, together, they build a collage that travels through space and time to draw a collective portrait of an experience that is as common as it is invisible.
Marta Duran Lozano
Marta Duran Lozano is a director and screenwriter with degrees in Audiovisual Communication and Creative Documentary from Pompeu Fabra University. Her debut film Les Culpables has been developed at DOK Leipzig Co-Pro Market and D’A Film Lab and received awards at Atlàntida Mallorca Talents Lab and the Laya Awards. She has worked as a director, screenwriter, editor and assistant director. She is currently developing her first fiction feature, El prec de les feres.
