Menopause Mistery

Menopause is something that half of us will go through sooner or later, yet we still know surprisingly little about it. Insomnia, hot flashes, and mood swings are increasingly discussed, but brain fog, memory and concentration problems, its impact on mental health, sexuality, relationships, and professional life remain far less visible.

Menopause Mystery begins when director Louise Unmack Kjeldsen, in her early fifties, watches her previously active life unravel under the weight of insomnia, sadness, and brain fog — symptoms she initially does not associate with menopause. As she discovers the connection between declining estrogen levels and mental health, the film develops into a broader investigation into one of the most neglected areas of women’s health. Kjeldsen follows the work of three scientists whose research reveals the profound consequences of menopause, while they themselves struggle with chronic underfunding and institutional resistance.

Combining scientific research with personal stories from women around the world, archival footage, and animation, the documentary exposes the taboos and patriarchal biases that still surround menopause. At the same time, it asks whether medical knowledge reinforces the idea of women as weak and fragile — or whether it can open up new ways of understanding the body, equality, and ageing.
